How we got our name

Kerf

In woodworking, Kerf is the thickness of material removed from a saw blade, usually measured in 1/1000 of an inch increments.  Making familiar accessories from unconventional materials requires a level of extreme precision, so we chose Kerf to represent us because it’s everything we are: precise, finicky, and obsessed with perfection.

"Material is at the core of all the design choices we make. The materials we work with are a reflection of ourselves."

Ben Saks, Founder of KerfCase

precision-made

naturally unique

Every KerfCase is made from real wood, so no two are ever the same. Built with precision to fit perfectly, each case still keeps the warmth and feel of natural wood. Smooth in the hand, rich with character, it’s a simple way to carry a piece of nature with you every day.

Launching the idea

Unsatisfied with existing cases, Ben spent an evening in the wood shop of Carnegie Mellon University's architecture school and created a case for his new iPhone 5.

Over the course of six months, the original design was extensively revised, tested, and revised again, and word spread from friends and family to the internet.

After seeing the demand for a sustainable product made from local and natural materials, Saks founded KerfCase in 2013 and began the process of making cases at scale.

Made to order

Our products are made to order and ship within five business days.  This helps keep our footprint small, and drastically reduces waste. One of our favorite services is showing customers our raw wood stock and letting them choose the exact piece that becomes their case.  We believe it's critical to do our own customer service rather than exporting it, so you can contact us directly if you'd like us to make something special for you!
